His family lived in Cleveland, MS until he was 1 year old. The depression forced them to sell their city home and move out to the farm in Boyle, a few miles away.

In addition to pastoring, he taught school for a couple of years, repaired TVs and other electronic devices, delivered newspapers, served as a police officer, and even worked as a janitor.
