Sir William Phelip, 1st Lord Bardolf was born in 1383. He was the son of Sir William Phelip and Julian Erpingham. He married Joan Bardolf, daughter of Thomas Bardolf, 5th Lord Bardolf and Anice de Cromwell, before 1407. He died on 6 June 1441, without male issue. He was buried at Dennington, Suffolk, England, under a sumptuous monument. His will (dated 1 December 1438 to 30 May 1441) was probated on 28 June 1441 at Lambeth, London, England.
Sir William Phelip, 1st Lord Bardolf fought in the Battle of Agincourt on 25 October 1415. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) circa 1419. He held the office of Captain of Harfleur from 1421 to 1422. He held the office of Treasurer of the Household to King Henry V. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.). He held the office of Chamberlain to King Henry VI. He was created 1st Lord Bardolf [England by writ] on 13 November 1437, although his name does not appear on the list of Peers summoned to Parliament on 26 September 1439. He lived at Dennington, Suffolk, England. He lived at Erpingham, Norfolk, England.
